Job Purpose
The Restaurant Manager serves as the primary contact and responsible person for our Baldivis restaurant operations. They are entrusted with ensuring productivity, managing employee training, controlling and developing operational systems within each department of the restaurant. Their role encompasses nurturing individuals and systems in their department, with an emphasis on enhancing synergy, productivity, efficiency, and profitability. The Restaurant Manager must provide superior customer service, maintaining our mission to leave customers happier than when they arrived and upholding company standards as an ambassador of our culture, brand, and values.
Key Result Areas
-
Operations: Clear and effective processes must be outlined and implemented for the business to realize its potential. These systems and operations should be designed with an emphasis on efficiency and productivity. Once established, continual review, monitoring, and reporting of these systems must be conducted to maintain their effectiveness. These systems should be designed to be future-proof, allowing for growth and developed with an objective of volume to ensure service periods are staffed adequately, and quality standards for both product and service are consistently met without compromise.
-
Human Resource Management: Our philosophy and culture are rooted in doing the right thing for ourselves and others. This standard must be upheld through efficient employee practices, ensuring high retention, motivation, and engagement of our employees. The roles created by this type of operational design must be clear to each person employed to carry out these duties. Effective human resource management involves placing, developing, and integrating people into roles that provide the best opportunity for effectiveness. This process must be monitored regularly to ensure all staff are satisfied in their roles. It also includes development opportunities, which cultivate diverse skill sets in employees.
-
Staff Development & Training: The most effective motivator for staff is personal development and self-actualization. Contrary to common practice, money and fear are proven to be ineffective motivational methods. The best way to ensure role clarity, job satisfaction, and employee engagement is to maintain an area of development for all staff members. This is also crucial for creating diversity among staff skill sets, which in turn fosters team cohesiveness by giving them a broader understanding of the entire team's framework.
-
Product Service & Innovation: Given the competitive nature of Perth's saturated restaurant industry, innovation is vital for establishing a unique brand identity. Each business needs to differentiate itself from its competitors to cultivate its identity and customer base. This focus must be integral to the conceptual responsibilities of the Restaurant Manager.
Key Performance Indicators
-
Growth in Sales: Sales increases are a direct indicator that operational systems are functioning effectively and efficiently. Sales growth must not only be established, but it must also be aligned with sales targets and projections. This ensures that the business is growing in accordance with the conceptual design of the business and that sales trends are being tracked accurately.
-
Staff Turnover: Job satisfaction is a result of effective human resource management. High staff retention signifies that this is being achieved. Monitoring staff turnover ensures that employees are not resigning but instead are engaging with the business. However, it is equally important to track the number of candidates unsuccessful in trials or job placements. A high rate of terminated employment can occur when the systems for integrating staff and creating job clarity are flawed.
-
Update & Debrief Meetings: Meetings of this nature must be conducted frequently to ensure team cohesiveness. Communication with employers and seniors is as important as ensuring effective communication with direct reports. Therefore, it is imperative to hold monthly staff meetings. These meetings offer a platform to review team performance, forecast growth, and take proactive measures against potential future issues. Establishing a collective understanding of the operational strategy is the only way to foster genuine performance among all individuals within the team. In addition to group meetings, one-on-one meetings are crucial for ensuring that all individuals have a comprehensive understanding of their job role. These meetings also serve as a platform for understanding motivation factors and identifying developmental opportunities for each individual.
-
Innovation & Uniqueness: Due to the competitive nature of the restaurant industry, especially in Perth, it is critical to focus on innovative practices to establish a unique brand identity. Each restaurant needs to differentiate itself from its competitors to develop its own customer base and brand reputation. This focus should be an integral part of the Restaurant Manager's duties.
-
Revenue Tracking: An increase in sales revenue is a clear indicator of the effectiveness of the operational systems. While the goal is to increase sales, the growth must align with the sales targets and projections to ensure that the business is progressing as per the planned design, and sales trends are accurately tracked.
-
Staff Retention: High staff retention is indicative of effective human resource management and employee satisfaction. Monitoring staff turnover rates not only shows the engagement level of the employees with the business but also highlights any potential issues with integrating staff and establishing job clarity. A high rate of terminated employment can indicate flaws in these areas.
-
Communication & Feedback: Frequent update and debrief meetings are essential to maintain team cohesiveness and ensure effective communication. While open dialogue with senior management and employers is vital, communication with direct reports is equally important. Monthly staff meetings provide a platform for performance review, growth forecasting, and preemptive action against potential issues. Furthermore, one-on-one meetings help to clarify individual job roles, understand motivational factors, and identify personal development opportunities.
